Sun-Kissed vs. Spray-On Tan: The Pros & Cons

There is something about bronzed skin, that healthy glow that makes you look and feel a million dollars. Nowadays this look can be achieved year-round and within minutes using a spray-on tan, rather than sitting in the sun for countless hours trying to even it out. Spray-on tanning has also become more popular among busy celebs, who can now get an instant tan days before a big event. Regardless of how you decide to perfect your tan, spray-on or sun-kissed – each has their pros and cons.

Sun-Kissed

Pros
  • Vitamin D –  A natural sun tan provides the body with Vitamin D that is vital for your skin, bones and health. Spending 10 minutes in the sun each day will provide you with the optimum amount of Vitamin D.
  • Its Free and good for the soul – There is nothing better than sitting outside in the fresh air and feeling the warm rays of the sun on your body. What’s better is that a tan can be gained without having to hand over any money.

Cons
  • Damage from UV rays – Over exposure to the sun can cause skin damage in the form of sun spots, freckles, wrinkles and premature aging. It can also increase the risk of developing skin cancer.
  •  Short-lived – Depending on your skin type, the long hours spent in the sun to achieve your sexy glowing tan, will fade within weeks.

Spray-On

Pros
  • Quick & Easy – A spray-on tan session will typically last between 12 to 15 minutes depending on the equipment and products the salon uses. This is useful to people that have busy schedules.

  • Even Coverage – When applied by a professional in a salon, spray-on tan is evenly applied over the body, where results can be noticed within 24 hours of application.

Cons
  • Skin irritation -  Although the chemical used in spray tanning products – DHA (Dihydroxyacetone) – is FDA approved for topical use, different skin types have different reactions. DHA is also not good when inhaled or exposed to the eyes.
  • Stains – Spray-on tanning products can stain clothing and skin. Staining on the skin is especially noticeable on the hands and under nails. Some spray tans may take longer to dry and rub off on clothing. This can be avoided if applied by a professional in a salon where drying usually takes about 25 minutes.

However you choose to achieve that sexy glow, make sure you do so responsibly. Tan outside and replenish your stock of fresh air and Vitamin D, but make sure you wear a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Or, get that sexy bronze effect from a spray-on tan - but make sure it’s done at a professional salon by a trained technician… and remember to let it dry!
